Tas: Tas running short of water for electricity

Drought-stricken Tasmania is so short of water that it may soon have to use oil-fired
electricity to supplement its usual hydro power.

The Hydro has announced that it's bringing its oil-fired Bell Bay power station to
full operational readiness.

General manager ROGER GILL says for the last three years annual inflows into Hydro
water storage areas have been 17 per cent below average.

He says inflows in the past seven months have been the second lowest on record.

Bell Bay, which was built as insurance against poor rain after the 1967 drought, was
last used in 1991.
